Joliet limestone and brick: beautiful, and demanding

Joliet has an architectural character unlike anywhere else on our route. The city was a major limestone quarrying centre, and that stone — along with a great deal of period brick — shows up throughout its older housing and civic buildings, the Rialto Square Theatre among them. Structures of that age and material are genuinely rewarding to work on and genuinely unforgiving of the wrong approach.

Limestone and soft historic brick both require mortar matched to their properties. Modern high-portland mixes are harder than either, and on a stone or soft-brick chimney that hardness transfers stress into the masonry units themselves. The result is spalling faces and, on limestone, surface delamination. Matching materials is not a preference here; it is the difference between a repair and permanent damage.
